Leonidas S. Roumeliotis

Orthopaedic Surgeon

I would like to welcome you to my professional website. The purpose of this domain is to familiarize the reader with my clinical and scientific practice.

I am an Orthopaedic Surgeon with formal Fellowship training in Hip and Knee Surgery from the United Kingdom’s National Healthcare System (NHS). I can demonstrate extensive validated surgical experience and scientific involvement in Hip and Knee Arthroplasty, Revision (re-do) Arthroplasty, and Arthroscopic surgery of the above joints.

It is my strong belief that Medicine should be a calling before a profession. My main goal is for my patients to feel safe and informed on their treatment options. Patient care starts on the first clinic visit and continues long-term after completion of treatment. My personal values push me towards continuous medical education to remain up to date with the scientific evolutions in my surgical practice. With regards to the spectrum of orthopaedic pathology that I treat, I adhere predominantly to the subject of my fellowship training to provide high quality services.

I was born and raised in Athens Greece. I was accepted in the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and received my medical degree in 2003. I completed my specialty training in Orthopaedics in the 2nd Orthopaedic Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens situated in the Konstantopoulio General Hospital of Nea Ionia, the Upper Limb surgery and Microsurgery Department of KAT Hospital, and the 2nd Orthopaedic Department of the General Pediatric Hospital “Panagiotis & Aglaia Kyriakou”.

In October of 2013 I was awarded the medical specialty of Orthopaedics following a successful written and oral examination. One year later I was awarded the title of the Fellow of the European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (FEBOT) following a successful examination in English. This title has been established by the European Federation of the National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT) to certify the scientific competence of specialized Orthopaedic surgeons at a European level. In other words, it is considered a European medical specialty title.

In April of 2014 I relocated to the United Kingdom to persue advanced training in surgical sub-specialties. From 2014 to 2016 I worked as a Specialist Registrar in the Arthroplasty Firm of the renown “The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital” in Oswestry Shropshire. Following this period, I undertook three Senior Clinical Fellowship posts. From 2016 to 2017 I worked in the University Hospital Southampton initially as a Senior Hip Fellow, and then as a Senior Knee Fellow. From 2018 to 2020 I worked as a Senior Hip Fellow in Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust in Basingstoke Hampshire. With the latter hospital I maintain a long-term honorary contract for research purposes, and ad hoc short term paid contracts as an independent surgeon to relieve the waiting list for Hip and Knee Arthroplasty.

During my time in the UK, I have specialized predominantly in Reconstructive (Arthroplasty and Revision Arthroplasty) and Arthroscopic surgery of the Hip and Knee joint under the guidance of experienced Orthopaedic surgeons of the National Healthcare System. I was trained in the diagnostic approach of painful and failed Arthroplasty, and in the development of treatment strategies for complicated and complex cases. Furthermore, I was involved in scientific research and medical writing in line with the training curriculum of the fellowship posts that I held.

In September of 2023 I have completed my surgical training abroad when I attended an intensive 6-week fellowship program funded by the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT Visiting Fellowship) in Hospital AZ Turnhout in Belgium. There I was educated in the AMIS technique for Hip Replacement through the Anterior Approach, and in Robotic Knee Arthroplasty with personalized alignment philosophy. As a result, I can offer a full spectrum of services in Hip and Knee Arthroplasty surgery by combining classic training with the most modern and scientifically validated surgical techniques.

In December of 2021 I was declared Doctor of Philosophy from the School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens with distinction, following the presentation of my dissertation on the creation of a feasible trauma data registry for the Hellenic healthcare environment, that was modelled after similar registries in developed western countries. Therefore, I hold the title of a Medical Doctor (MD), as well as that of an Academic Doctor (PhD).

I can claim authorship in a significant number of scientific publications in medical journals that are mentioned in the United States National Centre of Biotechnological Information (Pubmed), which is considered the gold standard for the validity of included medical prints. I have participated in important national and international scientific meetings through lectures and scientific presentations, and I frequently accept invitations to review scientific manuscripts. I maintain ongoing involvement in two long term research protocols that are conducted in a UK hospital monitoring the performance of Arthroplasty implants.

In Greece I run a private clinic in the Lycabettus area, and I perform surgery in the private hospitals “HYGEIA”, “EUROCLINIC ATHENS” and “LEFKOS STAVROS”.

Sincerely,

Leonidas S. Roumeliotis MD PhD FEBOT
